Triage nursing

Nurses General Nursing

Does anyone work in triage? I have an interview for a triage position in family medicine. I'm just curious what you all do and how you like it.

If the job is offered to me I will definitely take it, because I'm not overly fond of my current job. Plus it's full time with benefits as opposed to my current part time no medical benefits at a nursing home.

I would ask them if they have policies and procedures already in place. Does the triage nurse utilize a particular book/software program when pts call with problems, or do you use your own judgement on what to do (put pt in right away, appt tomorrow, refer to ER, etc). How many triage nurses do they have. What exactly is the job description for the position you are applying for. What exactly are they looking for. Will you also be responsible for refills? What is the procedure for that. Are they paper charting or on computer. I would search the word Triage on all nurses, you will get a pretty good idea of what triage can be. good luck.

True triage, determining s/sx, routing calls to most appropriate care providers, calling report to ERs, is OK...but when all of the pharmacy calls come in, run the other way. Using office nurses to request refills from providers is a waste of nursing school.
