Hi I am a new nurse who has not yet practiced. I am currently living in the comopact state of Maryland. I have not yet practiced at all. I have taken and passed my nclex. I have found a job and planning to move to the non compact state of Montana. My license expires August 28th 2013. So my question is do I renew my license here in MD then endorce or do i go straight for the Montana licesnse? Also will I be able to practice right away in Montana.

Go ahead and apply for your Montana license, the sooner the better. Whether you want to renew your Maryland license and keep it active (or have it made inactive, if that's a possibility there) is entirely up to you. Do you have any thought that you might ever return to MD? In that case, it might be a good idea to keep it.

You have to have an active, unrestricted license (in your case, in MD) in order to be able to apply for licensure by endorsement in another state.

Your license expires next week?? If that is the case you will need to renew in MD as you cannot apply for endorsement in Montana without a current license.

Yes, I should have said that once you have the Montana license, whether or not you maintain the MD license is a choice the OP can make.

agreed. I gave up my Tennessee license when I moved to Texas because I knew I would not move back. But everyone's situation is different.
