Starting in a nursing home?

Nurses General Nursing

Has anyone out there started out in a nursing home right after graduating? If yes did you feel that it gave you a base to work on or no?

I started in a nursing home after getting my LPN and my RN. As a result; I went back and got my Masters in Gerontological Nursing, my GNP and my NHA license. I could never imagine myself doing anything else.

I have to sharea comment my Director of Clinical services said the other day. She noted that the nurses we have working on the unit that came from LTC are "certainly resourceful" I just had to say of course we are, because when you work LTC you are it in many cases, you learn to become very resourceful. Much can be learned in that setting, I just caution anyone to ensure that you are working with safe and decent staffing, because you are it. It is a huge responsibility.
