Starting a new PEDS job

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey guys!

I'm currently a paramedic pursuing a career in nursing through a paramedic-RN transitional bridge, but I am still doing my pre requisites.

I start my first paramedic job in a pediatric ER and I am a little nervous.....

Any advice for working with children?

General advice overall with starting a new job?

Thanks!

Always tell them the truth. If it's going to hurt- DON'T LIE!

Have a ready repertoire of Disney songs ready to sing at a moment's notice.

Do NOT trust parents to keep them from falling off the cart/ exploring cabinets/ putting stuff into sharps containers. Parents cannot be trusted. Never assume ANYthing reasonable in the way of behavior.

Thank you so much!!!! Will definitely go by this

I agree with the first post. Tell the truth. Think back on your childhood memories at the ER or doctor's office. One can anticipate what things will calm or stress your patients. Keep some bubbles in your pocket. It goes a long way to distract a 1-2 year old.

I work closely with EMTs in my ER. I really appreciate those who anticipate the supplies I'll need for procedures. The work day goes by so swiftly. So, take some notes. It will make you invaluable. In addition, review normal pediatric vital signs. If the vitals are out of range, let a nurse know please.

Have fun! It's an Adventure for sure.
