Shadowing

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I live in a relatively small town, between 30-50k people.

I spoke with my pediatrician...ewww.gross..someone is puking in the bathroom behind me....yuickj!!!!

anyway!!! My pediatrician said i could shadow a nurse at his office. All I have to do is let him know when I want to come.

How many different settings should I try to shadow in?

Hospital?

ob/gyn?

Dialysis?

etc....

and will shadowing make me better prepared for clinicals?

Well, if you kind of know what areas of nursing you're interested in, shadow those. If you're just trying to get a general feel for nursing, I would recommend:

-- Clinic

-- General med-surg in a hospital

-- Critical care in a hospital

-- Long-term care

Those are very broad areas, but would give you a general feel for the different kinds of nursing available.

Thanks Johnny.. I know I want to become a CNM. Only thinking of shadowing because I will need a broad knowledge to pass the boards and it's very possible that I will have to work while getting my Masters.

who am I kidding? I'm a sponge. I like to soak up knowledge and can't wait to be a nurse. Maybe I can live vicariously a bit by shadowing..:-)

If you can find some one to let you shadow consider yourself lucky. I wanted to shadow at the hospital that my aunt, who is a nurse, works at, but her department wouldn't let me because of "confidentiality" and none of her nurse friends could take me either because of short staffing and confidentiality reasons.

How about volunteering? I've put in an application to volunteer at one of my area hospitals (one that I hope to work in when I finish schoool) to work in either childbirth education, being a cuddler or in any capacity to help the nurses. It is only four hours a week and will give me an opportunity to both learn and to help out.
