RN Job Offer

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Good afternoon everyone,

I have been lurking in the background seeking information and now I have a few questions that someone maybe able to assist me with.

Some background information about me. I have been a nurse (BSN) for 3 years and have experience in this field.

Currently, I have been offered a RN nurse coordinator position at a Mount Sinai NYC for 75k via email and the position is non-union. I have been informed that the position is going to be transferring to a unionized position.

1) Is the salary to low for my experience? if so, should I email or call the HR personnel regarding the amount? I have until 8/31/16 to accept or decline the offer.

2) When the position becomes unionized will my salary jump to the base RN salary that the union and hospital agrees too?

Thanks for in advance for the help!

Jesus!

Not a lot of time to respond huh? Well I feel like 75k is low for NYC I used to live in NY, but you only have 3 years experience. See if you can accept with exception, it sounds like you need to contact the union and see what the plans for that salary is. Explain you want to accept but the salary offer seems soft, and with it becoming unionized you want to know what that means for your job. In my experience even unionized supervisory positions get paid better than the average floor nurse. This is an excellent resume builder if you dream of being in management someday but this definitely deserves more than a days notice to mull it over. What benefits are you getting as well as the salary... Will you be allowed to negotiate for more, will the union make your pay higher or lower? Or will you be paid the same as a floor nurse? It sounds like you are well within your rights to explain you want the position but you want to discuss with a union representative what the potential unionization of your position means for you, since this will only be a hospital position for a short period of time... Be careful... Some unions will also give you the option to get a new contract for employment meaning you get the benefits and pay the union negotiates for... Or they may not be able to unionize your position because this was a pre-existing employment contract that was made. You have some homework to do. Call the union ASAP and ask management if you can have a little longer to do your homework because the fact that this is going to be a unionized position could help or harm you.

Thanks for the reply. I emailed the Union rep who is negotiating with the hospital. I am waiting to hear back. I also, contacted HR/talent acquisition and I would be discussing with them regarding more time to review the offer.

It is strange because I applied to be a internal medicine/pediatric RN, not a nurse coordinator. I am not sure the range for nurse coordinator in NYC.

That salary is very bizarre because new grad RNs get a base of about 84k for a staff nurse position at Mt Sinai, and that's WITHOUT any BSN/Night differentials.

This position is at an the internal medicine/pediatric office and not a floor nurse position. I am aware the salary is low. I was expecting the salary to be in the 80k range.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Perhaps Mount Sinai can get away with a lowball offer due to the growing glut of nurses in NYC and the tri-state area.

I am in a low cost-of-living Southern state and earn more than what you were offered. However, the difference is that I have a $400 mortgage whereas I am guessing your housing costs are astronomical. After all, it's NYC...
