psych RN's in ER

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello,

I'm looking for a job description for a psych RN consultant to the ER... like an psychiatric intake RN that would assess patients in the ER for psychiatric hosptialization or referral but not provide treatment for that patient while in the ER.

Also, for those who are familiar or superivise a nurse in this role - do you require that they complete a psychiatric nursing assessment and then chart that assessment or do is a simple "consult note" acceptable.

Thank you for your time.

The positions like that I have known of over the years have been for advanced practice psych nurses.

Specializes in psych, addictions, hospice, education.

I've done that job both as a RN and as an advanced practice psych nurse. I did a complete psychiatric assessment, made a narrative note in the chart, contacted the psychiatrist on duty who ordered admit or transfer to another facility, and the accompanied the patient to his or her site of treatment.

This job was as an employee in a general hospital that had a team of nurses who did the job. When I did it as an advanced practice psych nurse, I was the only APN on the team. The others were RNs with lots of psych experience.
