Psych/Phobia Medications

Nurses General Nursing

I was hoping one of you fine nurses here could tell me a bit about (or find a website for me) about phobia medications. For example, a public speaking phobia, flying phobia, etc.

- what type of medications are prescribed?

- for such medications, what EXACTLY do they do?

- is a placebo treatment often used for these?

Thanks so much guys.

For the most part, anti-depressants are prescribed. For the most part wellbutrin. Anti-anxiety are prescribed for specific occasions, such as a big social event or a airline flight, but they are addicting and so not prescribed very much or for very long. The best thing to do for this is CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy) w/ a good therapists. There are some other therapy's that have been shown to work as well. Hope this helps.

Beta blockers(atenolol, specifically) are showing some promise in "performance anxiety." I guess what they do is decrease the symptoms felt--the heart racing, shaking, sweating, etc.
