Proton pump inhibitors with meal or without?

Ok so I'm testing for the NCLEX in three days and I came across a question that asked if proton pump inhibitors should be given with meals...I'm confused since I read in one of my review books that proton pump inhibitors should be given prior to meals.However when I choose the answer (I'm using exam cram) "before meals" that was the wrong answers according to the feedback that I received from the computer !!!!Also in the rationale it was stated that H2 receptore blockers should be given prior to meal but I have read somewhere else that cimentidine should ge given with meals.Maybe I'm dwelling on small detail here but I cant afford to fail NCLEX,thank for the feedback!!

At my hospital, Protonix is given at 0600 on an empty stomach.

Thanks for the prompt response,I guess the exam cram has some corrections to do since I went ahead and checked in my drug book and it definitely recommends giving the PPI hour before meals and as far as the histamine h2 antagonist they should be given either with meal or without regards to meals!!!

I don't know why you get the problem with your test. PPI's should be given 30 minutes prior to meals, on an empty stomach and not combined with other meds. Cimetidine is not a PPI, it is an H2 antagonist and is normally given with meals and/or at bedtime. Make sure you have a good drug reference handy while studying.

Don't stress too much about perfection. It's good to try to get as much right as possible, but perfection is never possible. Best of luck on your NCLEX!

protonix can be given before or after meals. did you try looking it up in a drug book? drugs.com has a good section for professionals that includes admin info.

BeachButterfly, what NCLEX review book are you using (or where did you come across the question)? I'm just curious because I've had similar problems to what you're having right now with one particular NCLEX study guide.

exam cram cd from 2006,I hope they arleady made corrections!!!

Haha...me too! Unfortunately, it seems that I run into the same problem you do with NCLEX reviews. The reviews are sometimes different from what you're taught in classes, what you read/study, learn in clinicals, etc. We can't control it, so the best thing to do is just to learn from our "mistakes" and do the best we can!! :typing

Just because "before meals" is a "right answer" doesn't mean it's the "best answer." Would have to know the other choices to know if it's really a mistake on their part.

my husband completed his OTC drugs course last semester (2nd semester for his PharmD) and he said to take 30 minutes prior to a meal.
