School nurse Patricia Ann Gallagher is the talk of Cheltenham High these days and you can not get directions to her office without being told why.

"Yeah, she's in the next room," said secretary Maxine Littlepage. "You know you have to vote for her, right?"

Nominated by her husband, Dennis, Gallagher is one of four national finalists in Hallmark's One-in-a-Million Mom Mother's Day write-in contest. Starting tomorrow, the 200-word essay Dennis Gallagher wrote about his wife will be posted on Hallmark's Web site along with those of the other three nominees.

Anyone with Internet access can read the four essays at www.hallmark.com and vote for the best mom until the end of Monday. The mother whose essay receives the most votes will be awarded $1 million and a trip to New York City to appear on the NBC "Today" show. The other three get $1,000.

Last summer in Point Pleasant, her 12-year-old son, Brian, was seriously injured when a boulder the size of a small car rolled on top of him. Several people were able to get the large rock off of Brian, who was then flown to Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.

"During his five-week hospital stay, there were many times when the doctors gave us little hope that he would live," Dennis Gallagher wrote in his nomination essay. "The hospital staff tells us they get one or two miracles a year and Brian is one of them. I know it is due to the power of his mother's love and inner strength."

Brian, who just finished sixth grade at Elkins Park Middle School, agreed.

"She was very helpful at the hospital," he said. "If she was not by my side, I'd be dead. If I had to throw up, she had a bucket. If the ventilator started beeping, she knew what to do. She got me food that was not hospital food. She watched TV with me. She tried to play Nintendo but she wasn't very good."

So when Dennis Gallagher was in a Hallmark store just before Mother's Day and saw a display seeking entries in the One-in-a-Million Mom contest, he decided to submit an essay.

"I wrote it not thinking anything would happen," he said.

With the big vote only a day away, the Gallaghers have been telling everyone they know to get online.

"I've got about 50 cousins around the country and I asked them to call their friends and family to get them to vote," said Dennis Gallagher. "I hope we get a kind of pyramid effect. At our church [st. James], the pastor made an announcement during services."

Thanx Karen ,I bet we could get a couple hundred votes from Nurses at this BB alone. It would be great to see an actual Nurse and Mom win this million dollar award. :)
