Please, Please, Please fill it out! The BRN of California wants to know how bad of a situation we are in as new nurses trying to find jobs here in CA. If we do not let them know our dire situation, they cannot do anything about it, so please fill it out! I received an e-mail about it from our nursing office @ school letting us graduates know to fill it out! It'll only help us in the long run so they can cut back on accepting new students, etc. Thank you!
Before you fill out the survey so eagerly, ask yourself what the state board of nursing has the power to do.
They cannot wave a magic wand and suddenly make new jobs appear. But they can "remedy" the situation by making the number of new grads smaller. They can restrict the number of students who can graduate from various programs (I'm sure the students currently enrolled in these programs or on the waiting lists would appreciate that). This will limit the amount of money that the school bring in, so I think that the more likely out come is that they make the NCLEX harder so there are fewer GNs who get licensed. Then, there will be a large number of students with a great deal of debt who are unable to pass boards.
The best thing that the California BON has the power to do is nothing.

I received an interesting bit of mail today - a "New Graduate Online Survey" from the California BRN (I got my license in Jan 09). The stated purpose of the survey was to "document the difficulty that newly licensed RNs are having finding employment as a registered nurse." It goes on to say that they are trying to idnetify where RNs are finding jobs, in what facilities and locales. Don't know if this will end up making a difference or not, but I am glad someone is finally quantifying the enormity of the problem, and it would make sense for this survey to go national. Going through hundreds of online apps and searching forums for leads is obviously not the most efficient way to connect RNs to job openings.
