Nursing admissions interview

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello all,

I am new here. I have my final step to getting in to the LPN program I've chosen, which is an interview with the nursing staff and professors. I'm trying to think of a few questions they will ask me so I can better prepare myself. The only one I can think of so far is of course , "why do you want to be a nurse?" After doing a bit of reading, I have read a bit about people volunteering. I have not done any. I have four kids and haven't prioritized time for that yet. I am concerned about this, obviously volunteering at a hospital is a great way to get into the realities of what nursing can be like. I am aware of this. I do plan on getting in there asap now that I've read so much about it. Does anyone have any advice for me for this interview? Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond to me.

I am confident you have thought about why you want to be a nurse and help others, just convey that in your interview. Also, just because you have not volunteered does not put you at a disadvantage. You mentioned you have 4 children. Recognize that being a parent to 4 children is an advantage over someone who has no children. The prioritizing you do on a daily basis, the organizational skills you have and your ability to use alternative types of care (touch, comfort, distraction) instead of what doctors use (meds, meds and more meds) and of course all the caring that goes into being a parent. I am sure you have given much thought to being a nurse, just let your real authentic self show thru during the interview and I bet you will be fine! Keep us informed how things go and GOOD LUCK!

i don't think volunteer work is required. to be honest, i'd have more respect for an honest person that prioritized her time to be able to take care of her family than one that did volunteer work just to look good on a resume. but that said, the nursing program i got into didn't have an interview process, but a professor did ask me why i wanted to be a nurse. i gave my honest answer: it was probably a given that i cared about people, but seeing as i had to take care of myself first, i had to ensure that i chose a career that was stable and offered enough compensation to fulfill my needs.
