New employee, apply for another position in the same hospital?

Nurses General Nursing

I am a new nurse and got hired for a part-time position in a hospital. I will start next week. To be honest, I'd rather work full time. Now there are two other full-time positions opened in another two departments. My question is can I apply for the other jobs? Will I be able to apply for the FT jobs but somehow negotiate to work part-time in my current department and pick up 20hr/wk in the other department? Will my current DON be ****** if she knows that I applied for FT work in another department even before I start?

thanks for any input in advance.

First, check with HR: you may not be eligible to apply for a transfer (that's what they call internal applicants) to another position until you've been at the facility for a period of time (e.g., 3 or 6 months).

Second, if you work FT plus the 20 hours, that is going to put you into OT. They are probably not going to be willing to pay a new grad (or any nurse) double-time 20 hours a week every single week. If you work 2 PT positions, that is more doable since it'll keep you under 40 hours...but you need to find a department with a PT opening; don't expect to apply for a FT position, tell them you'll only work PT, and expect to get it.

Last, if you apply for a transfer it WILL get back to your current NM.

I would suggest that you be upfront with NM about your desire to work full-time. Perhaps she can help you get extra shifts in this department. If that's not possible, at least she won't be blindsided when she sees the transfer application, especially if you reassure her that you're not planning to leave her department.

I do have to say I doubt the hospital would let you move depts already. I can understand wanting F/T hours, but you may have to wait for 6 months.

Thank you so much for the posts! advices taken
