I just had job interview 1.5 weeks ago and thought interview went well. The interviewer said "we are still interviewing other candidates and will have a decision by next week. We will let you know either way." I have not heard from them like I was suppose to. Is it safe to assume I didn't get the job? Would companies still continue to interview other people if they were really interested in me? Or do companies typically take a long time to respond or make an offer?

Do not make assumptions. Different organizations progress through the hiring process at their own pace. After the interview, did you send a thank you email? If not you may consider sending them one and letting them know of your interest for the position. This could be your follow up. Good luck.

That is something YOU need to be proactive about. Could be part of the problem.

Find a physical address and use the postal system. Be proactive. To answer your question above, yes, organizations do sometimes interview mulitple canidates, even when interested in one person already. If they have more than one they liked, the process may indeed take longer than they expected.

Good luck.
