I dont know what to do...

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi and thank you in advance!

I graduated school last month and take my NCLEX on June 1st. I have been interviewing and can not decide. I know most recommend spending time in med surg after graduation but med surg bored me. I was offered a job on a post surgical care unit (very similar to med surg) and I have been interviewing at a multi system PCU. I like the atmosphere and culture more at the hospital that offered me the med surg position but feel like a higher acuity in PCU would be a better mental fit. I am so confused as to go in any direction and they are at completely different hospitals. I don't know what I want to move into long term but any advice is very appreciated!

Specializes in ICU.

PCU can be very, very fast-paced and busy. I worked in a PCU for 5 years, and it was constant go, go, go. Lots of cardiac procedures, pressure drips, cardiac drips, etc. We were basically a step-down from ICU, so many of our patients only stayed in PCU for a day. It was constant admit/discharge, etc. Just my experience.

I would take the better culture hospital. I'm no longer a new nurse though and value work environment more so than a specific unit. Nurses transfer internally all the time, and that might be what you end up doing, so I would prioritize a better organizational culture.
