How to gain experience in the medical setting before applying to nursing school?

Hi everyone! :)

I'm a pre-nursing student and I'm finishing up pre-reqs this upcoming 2016 fall semester. I plan on applying to nursing school by January 2017.

I heard that schools look for candidates who have hands-on patient care experience and some knowledge in the medical field. (I guess they want this so the applicants know what they're getting into) This makes me worried because I have no prior nursing experience. That is why I've been researching and scrambling all over the place for advice on what to do. I've thought of becoming a CNA but apparently I'm not eligible to apply if I have more than 30 college credits...

My question is: What can I do to gain some experience before applying to a nursing program? Are there any centers out there that provide free training e.g. phlebotomy, nursing assistant, shadowing..

Thank you!

Some schools may consider prior health care experience a plus, but many do not. Make sure you look at the specific program(s) you're interested in applying to. You dont want to waste time and effort in the wrong areas while neglecting the right ones.
