they are the best. I love that they bring magazines and cheer to patients. I also love their running to lab for us or other things that take up a lot of time when busy. They offer a smile and a warm welcome to all who enter the hospital. I think that is WONDERFUL. I admire and respect all of them and am glad they are there for us all.
You get your volunteers to run to the lab? I am so jealous! I can't get our volunteer out of her chair. She sits there on the phone, occasionally answering questions for guests and that about sums it up. Oh, and one year she gave us all Bourbon balls for the holidays. They were pretty strong. After eating one of them I understood why she never gets out of her chair. If she has eaten any she prob has a pretty good buzz.:rotfl:
... volunteers, what is the most useful task they can perform for you?
Think that'd depend on your specific needs.
Getting supplies (but not med's); transports; dressing litters; assisting patients with phone calls, water, ice; filing' lab runs; mail delivery; mailings; check distribution, etc.

When I retire I plan to volunteer at my local big hospital.
