Okay, I have a couple of concerns/questions. Let's say I interviewed at a place and the dept director tells you her staff likes you and gives you her card telling you to call her if her unit is the type of place you would be interested in working.....then a week later when you follow up with HR they say that she is not interested in offering you a position? is it me or is that a little strange, and somewhat sending mixed signals? Managers and fellow nurses out there what is this indicative of?

I always tell people I interview that they will be contacted in a couple of days to be told if they have been successful or not. I never give any indication as I have no ideas what the references will hold.

Sounds a bit strange to me.

Wow...sure sounds like mixed signals to me. Too bad their yes isn't yes and their no isn't no.

If I were you, I'd call the dept director. She said to call her if you were interested in working on the unit. So call her and see if you can find out what happened. Did they do a reference or background check or anything that could have changed their opinion of you?

I'd call her if she told you to. Could they have checked your references and/or job application and found out that you had an attendance problem, changed jobs frequently, etc? "Would you rehire her?" is a legitimate question when checking references. A "No" response makes me take a second look at the job applicant.
