Foster Care?

I had a patient yesterday who was removed from his mother's care, due to neglect. Mom is now in jail, and grandma is only allowed supervised visist. He's going to go into foster care.

I said to my husband last night, "Maybe we could foster him," kind of half joking, half serious. I expected to be shot down immediately, but he said, "If you want to, go ahead."

So I'm going to contact his CPS worker later today and see what I need to do to become a foster parent.

Have any of you all ever ended up fostering a patient? how did it work out?

Thanks for all the support. The baby I've been trying to get is an 11 month old, carbon monoxide poisoning. I can't get his CPS worker to call me back, though. I don't know if she's just really busy, or if they've already found placement for him or what.

I'm kind of disappointed, because I felt really bonded to him, but we're going to go ahead and go through the certification process just in case we ever come across another baby who needs us.

We've been suffering from infertility for 2 years now. One way or another, I'm getting a baby. :)

Texas is one of the states with the highest number of kids waiting for adoption! check out their 'waiting children' web for the picture listing. We have fostered many and adopted 2 so far and plan on adopting again once a few of our kids are a little older. Fostering is heart breaking because most of the children are returned to their homes. Good luck to you!
