Enlarged Tonsils

Hi everyone...

I've been having problems with my tonsils. Every now and then they swell up, but only on the left side, and then they go back down and what not. For a long while I was getting pus pockets on the left ones and I eventually went to see the NP at my doctor's office. She said it wasn't abnormal for them to swell up and go back down and everything and that some people are just prone to getting pus pockets on their tonsils. Then, months later I had a sinus infection and was put on Amoxicillan and since then (that was four months ago) I haven't had any pus pockets on my tonsils and they haven't swollen up.

Now, they are swelling up again and occasionally hurt. They are a 1+ and tonight I noticed what looked like the pus, except that it was green.

Does anyone know what's going on with my tonsils and if I should go to a doctor?

Of course you need to see a doctor ! Anything leaking anything needs a doctor.

I can't help anymore than that. Let us know.

I have always had big tonsils. I quite often have sore throats (sp?) but my mom has always told me not to bother telling my doctors? what do you think

A long time ago they used to take out tonsils like they were performing lipo but now they treat with antibx and THEN if they continue to hurt and "leak" they take them out. Tonsils are actually useful but not detrimental to your health. Kinda like your appendix. (meaning you can live without it)

Maybe your mom means exactly that? But I'd go if you always get sore throats. I got mine out when I was 9 yrs old.

I've always had sore tonsils with ulcers on them also, but my doctor is never willing to give out antibiotics so I stopped going to see him. When I did mention this to a lovely female doctor she suggested changing my eating habits/diet/lifestyle! Nothing much then?! I eat fruit/veg as much as poss and take a good womens vitamin supplement without fail and in a year haven't had any probs with my tonsils since, and I'd previously had this all my life.

i always had huge tonsils with pus pockets all over them. they were around a +2 and +3, but when ever i went to my dr he would not take them out because i didn't have strep. In his opion, I need at least 3 reaccurance of strep to get them out. so when i was about 15-16 i switched to my mom's dr and left the ped's dr. When he saw me (and my tonsils) he told me to go to a EENT, so when i saw the EENT dr he could not believe how was able to breath and eat with out anyproblems. Cause not only were my tonsils so huge but my adnoids were also he said my tonsils were kissing and should have been taken out when this all started at 8-9 yrs old. my tonsils were useless, they did not go up or down they stayed at that size, the only thing that would go away was the pus pockets. so it has been 8 years and i have not had a sore throat since that day! sorry just wanted to share my story. But there is a reason, A) Get a second opion and B) go to a EENT they are trained for that

When I was in college I used to get pus pockets on my throat all the time, whether I was sick or not. I don't know if it was from all the germs from living in the dorms or what but since I graduated (4 years ago) I haven't had any since except for once or twice when i had strept throat. I did go to an ENT when it was happening all the time and he was willing to take them out but I am glad I left them in.
