Are there any EMTs on the board or anyone who has worked as an EMT. I would like some specific info on the profession for a friend of mine. Thanks:)

I worked as an EMT when I was younger. It was a great job when I was in my 20's, but I sure wouldn't want it now. Let me give you both the good and the bad side of EMTing. I had two main reasons for getting out of it. The first was that I got shot at when I arrived on scene of a drug overdose. Unfortunately, EMT uniforms look a lot like police uniforms, and the area we were in was known for drug activity. I was one of several that had been fired upon in that area over a short time. Needless to say, that scared the life out of me. Second, I was naive. I never really realized the true danger that EMT's place themselves in constantly. The chances of injury to EMT's are pretty high, as well as all the wonderful things you bring home to your family.

Now, for the brightside. I love the patient contact, being the first one to provide the immediate care. I made a difference right then and there. I got to see so and do so much.

Feel free to pm me if you have any specific question, Roberta

Forgot to mention that initiation (sp?) into the male turf was rather interestering too. Makes college initiations look mild.

Overall, it was a great place to get my feet wet in the medical field.

I'm an EMT-P and I love every minute of it. What specific questions do you have? :-)
