I was wondering if there may be a list somewhere on the internet that lists all of the different states that have a critical nursing shortage and in what counties?

I've looked all morning and have found info, but it was for 2001 and 2004....

I have just started a new job in Tenn and was told during orientation that Tenn is one of the worst hit states for nursing shortage. The hospital where I work (total of 7 hospitals altogether) said they hired over 300 nurses just in January.

Large amounts of data always take time to be processed and interpreted -- meaning that published data is never exactly current. I believe the 2004 data is the most recent good quality national data. You might be able to find something a year or two more recent for smaller geographic areas (e.g. a specific state or region) on the websites of the specific state boards and/or state nursing associations -- but I am not sure about that.

I know for a fact that the border towns along the Texas/Mexico border suffer from a critical shortage of nurses. If some of the local hospitals must resort to offering sign-on bonuses of up to $50,000 to attract and retain nurses, then you know there's gotta be a dearth of healthcare workers in the area.
