Combining pediatrics and med/surg

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey everyone,

As I looked through the threads I noted that this topic has previously been discussed, but as it is something I am facing in my workplace I would like to hear from nurses that have went through or are going through this transition.

I am currently a pediatric nurse in a rural area hospital, out typical census is 2-3 patients. At times the floor does close, which results in the pediatric staff being floated to other areas in the hospital. Management has decided that the pediatric unit with be combining with a Cardiac unit within in the hospital as it will make for more efficient use of staff and reduce overall cost, as an entire unit will be closing.

Unfortunately, myself and the nurses I work with have very little if any experience with adult patient care. For instance, I have been a nurse for 7 years, 6 of which I have worked on pediatrics. I love pediatrics and feel comfortable and confident in my position. I am not comfortable on the adult units, as I have no experience with charting or physicians in those areas.

So my questions are:

- If you have experienced this transition, were you given any type of orientation to the floor/charting? We will not be giving any.

- Any safety concerns you have faced?

- Did your overall census decrease?

- Any suggestions for making transition easier, I have already completed ACLS and have been brushing up on medications.

Thanks
