Cape Cod to Boston Commute

Nurses General Nursing

I am a new grad nurse and I have received two job offers; one is a Doctor's office here on the Cape, and the other is a major hospital in Boston. The only real pro about the Doctor's office is that it is local... My commute to Boston is about 1.5-2 hrs, but I have been in traffic for over 3 hours before. Moving to the city is not an option for me right now. I was wondering if anybody makes this commute on the daily and if it is worth the hassle.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone knows if there are any nursing carpools out there, that would be something I would be willing to look into as well! :)

Take the Boston position for at least a year. A local physician's office is not going to give you the clinical experiences that the hospital will. Get creative with housing, the drive is too long. Is there someone in Boston you could room with on work nights?

As of right now there are no options for housing, but maybe in a few months I can start looking into a studio closer to the city.

That commute sounds like a deal-breaker to me. That's 20 hours weekly spent in your car??

I don't know, I'd probably take the doctors office job. That's still solid experience and you won't go insane.

Is the Boston position days or nights? If it's nights, at least you could count on less traffic.

I know people who've done it. I think they're all crazy. I know 2 nurses who try to work 3 days in a row and stay at a hotel just outside of the city for the 2 nights in between. I know a Nurse Practitioner who commutes from Sandwich every day. I've never lived more than 6 miles from my primary job. Why isn't moving to the city an option?
