Nurses General Nursing

I started out in NICU and was there for 2 years and loved it! But I wanted to be closer to home so I applied for a new job. Landed the job but in mother/baby and their nicu doesnt open until august therefore I have togo back to adults for some time now. Not to mention, I am on training and 25 weeks pregnant and learning a whole new role with adults is alot for me and I am having so much back pain with this pregnancy I am regretting leaving my old job! What would you do? I dont want to just quit and running back to my old job is not an option I am due in June and my benefits wont kick in until 90 days if I switch back to my old job. I feel so dumb for leaving but I know this new job will open up opportunities for me! So much more experience and a brand new nicu when I return off maternity leave. I am just stuck.

If you could list your problems in order of severity, number one being the biggest problem, it would help us better respond.

A new job, dealing with adults instead of newborns, can be hard irregardless of any other issues you mentioned.

Your, I assume, first pregnancy can be an anxious time for you.

Back pain for a nurse is a problem irregardless of the cause. Ask your obstrician what you can do for it.

I think you should tough it out till the baby comes. You may even be eligible for medical leave sooner than your due date due to the back pain.

Could you work less hours?

I totally understand most of your situation!! I left a pediatric ER that I absolutely loved to be closer to my family as well. I also found a job (two actually) that were not a good fit - they both hurt my back :(. I'm not pregnant, but I do suffer from back pain from catching an adult patient when I used to work with adults. So I do feel you there!! For your situation I might try to stick out your new unit, given that you're pregnant and need the benefits. Also, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you will be able to go back to the NICU it seems - August isn't that far away. Like the person before had said, maybe you can go on an earlier medical leave due to the back pain; I'm pretty sure that is possible! Good luck, hope the job and the pain get better!!

I like your advice its actually my second kid I have a 3 year old now. I think I am just overwhelmed going from babies to adults but its until their nicu opens up in 7 months. Also I am in school for my bsn. I guess I didnt get them clearly on what floating would be its basically where they need me right now even with adults
