Gateway Technical College (Kenosha) Students

U.S.A. Wisconsin

hello everyone, i am new to this forum and would like to know if there are any past (or current) gateway tech student that can give me insight on how the nursing program is. i would like to know what the instuctors are like (were like), how the program itself was for you, if you worked as a student nurse intern while in the program, what the full-time load was like as a student, what the clinical experience was like? i appreciate all replys. i am new to gateway and about to start the nursing program in the fall of this year 2011. thanks guys! :nurse:

I don't think United has a full time SNI program...Or if they do it's news to me. As far as I know all their SNI positions are part time, and they are paid for working part time...I'm not sure on the pay rate, I thought someone told me it was around 13 or 14 an hour...but this person was also a CNA in the hospital before they were an SNI so I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not.

I don't know anything about MSOE's program, sorry. All I know is the people I've talked to who go there said it's hard (they weren't nursing majors though) because of the trimester system. You might be better off starting a separate thread about that, since this thread mostly attracts GTC people.

I'm pretty sure I thought someone tell me they made around $14 as an SNI...but they were also a CNA at the hospital for a few years before that, so it might be different based on experience...I know they pay brand new CNA's in the $10 range.

luv2b a nurse, are you saying that you were employed at this company but was not able to get the position as a SNI? Was the competition with the new grad (your graduating class) or from within the company? Wow, thanks for the heads-up. I've heard that when new grads go out seeking employment, they are told that "the company is looking for someone with experience".

Yeah, I've heard that too. I definitely recommend trying to get an SNI position. Froedert up in milwaukee claims to hire only BSN nurses now, but I know of a new grad from GTC who was offered a position up there because she had CNA/SNI experience and the other people interviewing for the position did not.

Thanks soxgirl2008. I am thinking about which school to transfer to after GTC, some of the students claim that Parkside does not offer 2 for 2...meaning that once you graduate from GTC, there are additional classes to take in order to be considered a junior upon enrolling to the BSN program. Do you know of this?

I am employed by Aurora. I worked there as a CNA while I was in school. I applied for a few extern positions but did not get one due to my casual status so the other girls got first opportunity. At my hospital the aides are in the union (this may not be the case at all Aurora hospitals but it was at mine) and the extern position is union ($15.50/hr) so those that were in the union get first dibbs. Being casual (0 assigned hours is what I wanted while I was in school so I could work on my schedule, not theirs) I was not in the union so it was really tough to get an extern spot. Some of the girls I worked with were competing for the spot and they also attended my school, though not usually in the same semester.

As for the RN position, I got that at the hospital I work at with barely an interview and they basically "created" a position for me:) It does pay to get your foot in the door!

I had one girl from my class (GTC ADN) get an RN job at Froedtert too. I have no idea how she did it. There is also a guy that posts on here that graduated from GTC and got a job at Froedtert as an RN. Both were in Froedtert's acute trauma something or other unit. I applied there in their mom/baby unit and never got a call back.

I don't know about Parkside but I just enrolled at Concordia University/WI. They had the best tuition price and allowed for transfer of more of my credits than other schools would. I got 87 credits transferred in (out of a max of 90.) I only need 43 credits to graduate with a BSN. 6 of those are religion, 3 humanities, and about 24 nursing credits. They have an online or face to face class with classes in Kenosha, Waukesha, Mequon, and Green Bay. Check them out. Based on my credits I am considered a junior there and could finish in a little over a year if I busted my butt!

I'm not too sure...What I do know is Uw Parkside's nursing program is actually UW-Milwaukee's program, it's consortial and they offer classes at the UWP campus but your degree is from milwaukee.

^^That's UW-Milwaukee's RN-BS coursework, and I am almost positive you can take a lot of the classes at UW parkside or online...I also think that the main difference in the ADN and getting the BSN through parkside/milwaukee is the pre-reqs (organic chem, nutrition, etc.) And the advanced nursing courses you can take online for the most part (or so it says).

I'm guessing you might have to take an art class and a history class and nutrition and organic chem...I'm not sure what else...I did all my pre-reqs at parkside including nutrition and organic chem ( i had planned to apply to parkside program but i'm not competitive enough) so I'm *hoping* once I graduate from GTC I don't have to take that many credits in order to have my BSN.

I'd recommend looking at all the RN-BSN programs in the area...UW-Milwaukee/Parkside makes the most sense for me since I've got a bunch of credits from there but CUW or somewhere else might work better for you!

Just wanted to provide some more information as it relates to the SNI program that United Healh Systems has in

for SNI. It can be done full-time with benefits and part-time no benefits. I also spoke with HR today asking about doing the SNI 1st year while in clinicals. You don't have to be finished with your 1st year of clinicals but enrolled with the Wisonsin CNA license. In your 2nd year of clinicals you don't need the CNA license. For me I have my CNA license but it's from Illinois. So, it would be best for me to wait until I am in my second semester of clinicals or quarters since that is how my school works.

Can anyone tell me more about Gateway and their experience with the waitlist/petitioning? I will have all my pre-req's done by summer 2012, and want to petition for the following spring, but a wait of 2 to 3 years??! Please share your experience!

They go off of your date of acceptance into the nursing program. So if you registered at gateway, registered for the nursing program and then started your pre-reqs you've been waiting since then. It's not a wait of 2-3 years AFTER doing your pre-reqs unless you took them somewhere else or for whatever reason weren't registered for GTC's nursing program.
