FY2020 Army Nurse Corps

Published

Hello!

My name is Dustin and I thought it would be a good idea to create a topic for those who are applying for the FY2020 Army Nurse board! A little about me; I am prior service Army enlisted with four years on active duty as a 19D (Cavalry Scout) and four years in the reserve as a 68W (Combat Medic). Recently, in December of last year I graduated with my BSN from a highly reputable school in Texas. In January of this year I started my new job in a Cardiothoracic and Transplant ICU, but in the process of applying to the 66H (Med-Surge Nurse) position with the Army. Per my recruiter, this is essentially the standard for nurses who have less than two years of RN experience and who will attend the Army’s Nurse Residency Program.

I’m hoping that my year of ICU experience and my CCRN certification at the time right before leaving for training will be an advantage to changing over to the Critical Care Nurse AOC (66S) as soon as I can. ? If it wasn’t for my yearning to return to the Army and wear the uniform again, I would just wait until I have over two years of civilian experience and apply to the 66S position. My desire to continue to serve is stronger than my AOC, 200%!

Please, use this to connect with others and share your experience! I look forward in embarking on this journey and hearing from others.

Has anyone heard of boards being canceled due to COVID-19? I just completed everything for my packet that was projected to go to the April 21st board and hoping that it is still a go.

If anyone is still following this thread.
Good luck to everyone who’s packet is at the board today! I heard they are doing a virtual board due to COVID and, from what my recruiter said, could delay the notice of the results.

Update: I am awaiting a Commander's Interview for a moral waiver I had to get for an incident I had when I was 17 (I previously had to get a moral waiver for the same thing when I enlisted almost 10 years ago). My recruiter said that the results of the board are out, but I am in a "pending" status until my waiver is approved. Does this mean I have been selected and just waiting for this to pass?

I feel like we are in the same boat. My recruiter told me I was selected for the February boards, but I am also awaiting approval for a moral waiver before I can sign a contract. So far, it has gone up the chain of command and I received a call from the battalion commander like two weeks ago. Now, just waiting some more I guess..

Interesting. It sounds like you were able to find out if you were selected or not before your waiver was approved. I feel like my recruiter is holding back on telling me I was selected until the waiver is good to go, haha. From my experience with a moral waiver in the past, the commander’s interview is the final step before they approve it. Are you going Active Duty or Reserve?

Well that’s good to hear! I am going for Reserve. How about you?

I applied for Active Duty. How was your call from the Commander?

It actually went very well. He seemed like a very down to earth person. It was a short call but, he stated he got what he needed to write my letter of recommendation in order to move the waiver forward. Hopefully all this will move along as we begin to re-open our state (I’m from WI). Where are u located?

I did my interview with the Company and Battalion Commanders today. I was told that I was selected and should go celebrate, but an hour later the Company Commander called me and told me she made a mistake and that I was actually on the OML.... huge let down after being told I was fully selected. Apparently the Army filled up all the 66S slots and I am waiting on the list with 3 other people for openings.

Damn!! How does that even happen?! I’m sorry about that, but CONGRATS on being the OML. So, now Do you just gotta wait and see if others don’t accept their commission?

Haha yeah I don’t even know... it was crazy. The commander just kept apologizing, but I have no clue how that messed up. Yeah, I have to wait for someone to decline their commission or wait until the Army opens up more slots. If I do not come off the OML before Oct. 1st, I’ll have to re-board...
