Fundamentals/basic nursing practicum 1

Published

I take it basic nursing practicum 1 is my school's version of fundamentals? It'll be one of my first classes if I do get accepted for this fall.

Would anyone be willing to tell me what all is taught during this class? I am seeing posts about it being very hard and it's scaring me silly! I would really appreciate any info and it would possibly help me breathe a little easier!

Thanks! :-)

Congrats! I dunno. I hear things that Fundamentals is a walk in the park, and then I hear others say its gawd awful. What I hear the most from my school is that Med-Surg I is the worst. So, I'm going to withold judgement until September when I start. Only then will I truly know what it is like.

I hope it isn't too bad! Our book is by Potter. I saw some reviews that books by them are awful (it was on amazon).. Has anyone had this experience??

Mine is by Taylor; comes with DVDs, a study guide, and a skills checklist for clinical lab. I can't wait!! If your book stinks, definitely consider investing a good study guide to help clarify anything you don't understand. :)

Me too. I'll be using Wilkinson for Fundamentals. I haven't heard of or used Potter but from what I can see of the reviews, it doesn't look good. Lets hope your instructors change their minds. :lol2:

I'm just gonna buy supplemental books as cheap as I can find them!

My book was by Perry and Potter.

I liked the book.

Our Fundamentals wasn't hard..the hard part was learning to think like a nurse and not some random Joe Schmoe!

Ours were broken up into 2 classes. One covered the nursing process, ethics, grieving process, cultural, Maslow, history of nursing, legal, etc.

The other course was our clinical course and we learned basics and some more involved processes regarding the body, as well as body mechanics, therapeutic communication, ADLs, vitals, etc. We went into the hospital and interviewed patients and did vitals and care such as bedpans, bathing, making beds...

Ditto. This is pretty much a carbon copy of my Fundamentals course. Not as stressful as I thought it would be. Don't worry you'll do fine! :D

I would suggest checking your college catalog...my fundamentals class contained blood transfusions, IV's, meds, etc...along with the basics. Each college is different.

I wasn't implying that their program would be the exact same as mine, just sharing my personal experience.

Oh no, I didn't think you did, just reading thru other posts and another similar thread...seems everyone's fundamentals class is different. I just thought for a better definition of the class, it would be best if they checked out their college catalog :)

Oh ok. Sorry I misunderstood. Thanks for clarifying! :o
