Frustrated LVN in DFW area!!!!! Is anyone hiring!?!?

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Ohhhhh boy.

Well I have been living in the DFW area for about 6 months now. I have applied everywhere and had several interviews. I graduated LVN school last October and have had one job from Jan-April until I moved up here. I am starting to become super frustrated and bummed out because so far I have had no luck up here. The RN job postings are endless and I don't know if it's the area because in San Antonio (where I am from) it seemed easy as pie to find a job. I

have even began applying for MA positions.

Has anybody else experienced finding a job in DFW as an LVN? Advice? Words of wisdom?

:arghh:

Thank you!!

Theres actualy quite a bit of info on the texas forum about this.

Also search the Commuter's posts. She is a former lvn now rn who has worked in the dfw area extensively. She has written some very helpful posts about this in the past

Good luck, and welcome!

I relocated from California to the DFW area in late 2005. DFW is where I started my LVN career. During the years that I worked as an LVN (2006 to 2010), finding employment was easier. However, several changes have transpired in the local job market.

1. More LVN programs have opened for business or expanded in the past five years, meaning more new nurses are being churned into the local employment market. This is resulting in an oversupply of nurses without the corresponding demand.

2. Demand for nurses, especially LVNs, started drying up locally during the recessionary years of 2008 and 2009. Unfortunately, the demand has not returned to what it was prior to the recession.

3. People from all over the country are relocating to DFW, many of them nurses. While living here I've met nurses from California, New Mexico, Arizona, Iowa, Nebraska, Mississippi, Louisiana, Wisconsin, Idaho, Oregon, Alabama, New Jersey, New York, New Hampshire, Maryland, North Carolina, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Massachusetts, Michigan, Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and many other states. Experienced nurses from other states add to the competitive job market.

4. People from other countries are relocating to DFW, many of them nurses. I've met nurses from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, the Philippines, Nepal, India, Great Britain, Cameroon, Ethiopia, South Africa, Canada and other countries. Experienced nurses from other countries add to the competitive job market.

Where in the DFW area are you located? Are you closer to Dallas, or are you on the Fort Worth side?

DFW is saturated from what i hear...with transplants and new grads. Youre new. It doesnt help. You shouldve held onto the first job a bit longer.

If you've been on several interviews, there are jobs. *shrug* How are your interview skills?

Land a job before you move. Even in Texas.

Take PRNs. PRN = FT work. These facilities pretend otherwise but practically all have staffing problems. There are always shifts to pick up. You can get a PRN. It's not as though youre fresh off the assembly line.

Its possible that you just dont know where to look. Some nurses have difficulty finding jobs even in San Antonio. I attended school with plenty of them. Get a PRN, somewhere. Get to know other nurses. Youll always have a couple pulling shift with their FT. Theyll know whose hiring and nurses are always talking about "whose hiring" and "what thryre paying". Jobs breed jobs.

Im a native born Texan, btw.

Epic health services are always hiring

I too recently (6 months ago), from California to DFW. However I landed a job prior to my move, in Retail Health. You should look into Retail Health and Urgent Care, these areas seem to be hiring. LVN's are a new addition in Retail Health, and businesses such as Walmart, Kroger, Target, CVS and Walgreens,(to name just a few), may provide an option for you. Long-term care will always be an option and what you may have to do until something else comes up. Also you should look into the State and County jobs. The process of finding a job is tedious. Keep your head-up, update your resume and sharpen your interview skills and you will find a job.
