Frontier Nursing University - Male Student Nurse Perspective

Hello all!

I am new to this site. I am seriously considering Frontier Nursing University's MSN/FNP program. My background is Fire/Rescue with 14 years experience as a Paramedic, and 3 years experience as an ER Nurse. My cumulative GPA is around 3.7 and I have all the necessary pre-reqs of statistics and health assessment. I read somewhere that the male student population is around 5% at FNU, but I'm wondering if that's because of their Midwifery background. I'm curious to know what the male nurse experience is at FNU, or the perspectives from any female students on their male counterparts. However fair or unfair it may seem, does anyone feel there might be an advantage to being a male nurse in regards to the admissions process at FNU? It didn't really occur to me that being a male might help until I read posts on here that indicated it could be. Any comments on the admissions process at FNU would be helpful though.

I don't know anything about FNU specifically, but every school I know of does not offer extra points for admission due to sex/gender. Schools offer admission based on how well prepared a person is for core nursing classes determined by academics and previous experience. I would actually hate for males to be given priority, because 1) the obvious unfairness and huge potential for discrimination but also because 2) I wasn't accepted to a program because I'm biologically male, I was accepted because I worked hard for it. I feel that admission to a program should be solely based on merit.

Now, I HAVE seen scholarships specifically for male nursing students, just as I've seen scholarships specifically for female science/engineering/tech students.

Anyway, all that being said, just based on your gpa and your background, I don't think you'll have a problem. Even if you don't get into FNU, there are plenty of universities that would accept you in a heartbeat. I don't think you will have a problem.
