From PNP to FNP

Updated:   Published

Hello!

I am a CPNP-PC with previous RN experience in NICU, pediatric home health, and only 6 months of Adult ICU. I am so disappointed on the job market for PNP's, althought I always heard that there was such a huge demand for PNP's, I've come to realize that this is not necesaarily true. Everytime I do a job search, or even contact clinics in my area, they are always looking for FNP's. After not being able to find a job in my area, I am set on wanting to go for my FNP. And yes, there are positions in the US for PNP's, but I am not in the position of being able to move..... I am trying to look for Post-master's certificate programs to start my FNP, but most programs require previous experience in the field that I would enter ( in this case, family practice). Does anybody out there know of programs where experience with adults is not a MUST? I mean, I have heard of NP's who never worked as an RN and still manages to get into FNP programs AND get awesome positions as NP's..... and here I am, unable to find a position in my specialty..... this feels so degrading.... I would really appreciate any help or advice. Thanks in advance.

Sincerely,

Hi, I'm experiencing the same issue. I'm a PNP, pediatrician from Cuba, and I can't find a job as a pediatric nurse practitioner. It's extremely frustrating. I'm trying to figure out the best way to resolve this, but not sure if a post master certificate will be the solution, or going back to school to become FNP.

Any recommendations????

Thank you,

Hello!

So sorry you are having a tough time in the job market. Im a psychiatric nurse practitioner and the last two jobs I got werent even advertised. The first one I emailed one of the directors at the clinic site, the second through a recruiter. I would try contacting clinics and practices directly to see if they need any help. A PNP I used to know had to move around a lot because her husband was military and would just email clinics with her resume and she would find jobs so much quicker! I know with a lot of job postings sometimes your application doesnt even get looked at by an actual person, it just gets screened by a computer algorithm. If pediatrics is your passion don't give up!! Best of luck!

Have you looked into Frontier?  I don’t recall them having hard requirements for experience. If anything your pnp background would be helpful for an FNP track.
