From Nepal on H4 visa in the US

Published

Hi All,

I'm RN from Nepal and I'm in US in H4 visa (dependent visa of H1). I have evaluated my education from CGFNS and applied for licensure in Colorado Board of Nursing. But, the board is asking me for SSN which I don't have it. Were anybody in the same situation? Is it compulsory to have SSN to apply since I'm physically present in the US?

The state can ask for a SSN before issuing a SSN regardless on being physically in the US and there are a few states that do this. On a H4 you can't work and until you get a work visa you will not get a SSN and license issued.

Does anybody know if there are some sort of bridging programs that I can take? I completed 3 years of Associate degree from Nepal and I'm RN licensed from Nepal.

Also, is it the wisest option to consider RN to BSN programs here in US? I'm in PA, so is there any good universities/colleges that you recommend ?

I appreciate your help!

hi Silverdragon102,

If we don't get SSN before getting work visa, then how we'll the get the work visa? To get work visa, first, you have to be licensed from that state, and to be licensed, you need SSN? It seems like obtaining SSN, getting work visa, and being licensed are interlooped with each other because they need each other to get the other one and so on. can you suggest me other options in this case?

Many states now are requiring proof that you are in the US with a legal work/immigrant visa before they will issue a license. A license can be issued easily enough once you have a SSN and there is nothing stopping a employer filing for you a work visa as long as you meet requirements (passing NCLEX will meet requirements) and you have a vsc (again vsc can be issued without a license as you just need a pass in NCLEX) Many have managed to do this without a SSN and get a work visa

The issues you have as a H4 is that you can not work so you need to find a employer willing for H1b and that you may find hard with the current US economic issues currently going on.

So, can the employer willing to file H1b (assuming the good economic condition) without first being licensed in US? i'm in the impression that the US employer won't offer us the job unless you are licensed here in US. am I wrong to think this way?

again, thanks much for your help!

There is nothing stopping a employer from filing as long as you meet requirements and they may ask proof that you have passed NCLEX and the BON can easily submit documentation that states you meet state requirements and a license will be issued with a SSN and you can provide proof that you are in the US with a valid work visa

Thanks Silverdragon102,

Now, it's getting clear. do you know any good websites where we can find the list of jobs/employer where i can start contacting them?

i know there is a huge retrogression right now, do u think the new will be passed anytime soon? so, i was also thinking to do RN-BSN program in the meantime.

I doubt retrogression will be lifted for a long time to come. The demand for immigrant visas far outweigh visa allocated and I can't see them increasing allocation as they need to look after own citizens and current legal residents first.

Regarding jobs well to be honest I think it is a case of contacting hospitals in the areas you want to love and discuss with them.

If you meet requirements and have a SSN a license will be issued but some states do require proof that you have a valid work/immigrant visa before they will issue a license. Having a license will not allow you to work without legal visa
