From Business to Nursing....

Published

Hi im new here from 24yrs old PR...I have a BBA in Marketing and 1 yr of law school. Ever since i began my bachelor's degree i knew i was making a mistake. My father is a business man and a lawyer so i followed on his footsteps...WRONG!!! I totally hated every step of the way and even though i graduated high honors got super awsome grades in law school it just wasnt for me. I always wanted a profession in the health field and was always more inclined to nursing and/or MD. I am a mom(just like alot of you) and have a little boy who means the world to me and my only fear is that i miss out on the important parts of my family. I didnt go to med school because of the fear of leaving my sons life for 11 yrs and not be a part of it. I love nursing for the care of patients. I love attending ppl and making them feel great. Plus i have to add the reason that nursing appealed to me what when my son was in the NICU(the ladys did and awsome job and i was thankfull to them, I owe them my heart)....I would like to do the same someday for someone..

Money...I dont want to be rich i just want to do soemthing i love and be able to live. I have already submitted a readmission for the completion of a BSN but i still worry about family time. My nursing pasions(which can change when i do my practice) are Midwifery and CRNA both of which i know are extremely demanding carrers and the path to get to them is equally demanding...

I guess my quesiton is....Will being a nurse draw me away from my children/family(right now only one child but i hope there are more someday)....??

Thanks for all your answers in advance...

First of all, BRAVO! to you for recoginzing and hearing the calling of your heart. I could tell just by the way you wrote your post that you are a woman of great depth and compassion.

I wanted to answer a couple of your questions regarding nursing and family. As most of the people on here know, I have been a single father raising my kids alone for a number of years. I have to tell you that nursing did not pull my family away from each other. The opportunities and diversity available through nursing actually afforded me the a career that has made me very happy. I can tell you that you will not get rich working as a nurse, but you can make a living at it. In addition, you can enter into nursing at the Associates degree and then work as an RN while you are attending night or online classes to finish your BSN or MSN. Of course, if you plan on advancing your degree to CRNA, then that will take additional time. I am sure there are plenty of CRNA's that can address the time commitment from their perspective.

There is no regret on my part for becoming a nurse. It has been a very rich and fulfilling career. Of course, there have been plenty of times when I have questioned my own sanity as to why I do this to myself everyday. But in the end, I know I make a difference in the lives of many people and that is rewarding to me.

Good luck with your decision. :)

Hello! A career in nursing may actually provide you with more flexibility to meet your family's needs. Regarding the pursuit of a nursing education: Occasionally, you may find some of the course work demands a significant amount of time, but you have already demonstrated your ability to be successful with your prior educational endeavors. While you are going through your future nursing program, you may see some condescension in the instructor-student relationship that may be bothersome to you given the fact that you are already a degreed individual who has achieved success. Your business experience/education will nicely augment any work you might do in nursing. Best of luck to you!

Hi, I have been a nurse for many years and now I would like to go to law school. I don't know why but I get p..... with attorneys. They are not helpful espicially when you have legal problem. My brother in law who is a lawyer keeps saying I don't want to do that--yes I do want to do that. Their are nursing schools that will use your BA degree and help you get your RN. You may just need to take a 2 year course. I think Duke University has a program. Nursing helps when raising a family and you meet alot of terrific people and some "shi??? Heads" like every other business. Your young so go get your RN Good Luck!!!

I think you are my long lost twin! I am 23 & was in a our year business program because of the pressure of those around me to make big money. I was great at business and received great marks also...but I hated it! I had no desire to enter the business world at all. This semester I dropped my two business courses and am starting on everything I need for the RN.

When I think of being a RN...it feels like...well I don't know how to describe it. Just right. But I have a nine month old daughter who I didn't want to take a lot of time from because she is my life and she comes first. I have become a home health aide because of the flexibility of working how much/little I want and I am completing my nursing degree part time. Actually it is so part time, it will probably be 2008 before I see graduation but the HHA helps my husband with those little expenses like gas in the car, diapers...

It will work out. I believe leaving business for nursing will be one of the best decisions I have ever made for myself. (I hope for you also!) Where else can you find such a fulfilling career that challenges and excites you along with decent pay and amazing flexibility and versatility!

I think the only person losing out on people like us leaving business for nursing is Donald Trump! (But hey, if he ever gets sick...:rotfl: )

Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that there is someone out here who is in the exact same boat as you are. Don't give up!

Just to give you an example, I was an LVN when I completed business school with a BS in Computer Information Systems. I became a programmer for awhile in a data base company until I realized nursing was the right path for me. So, I continued to pursue that path until I became an RN this year. If you feel you should be a nurse, I would suggest to go for it. With your Business degree, you can actually do either "paper work" nursing or direct patient care.photon71
