Fresno/Madera housing

Does anyone have any recommendations on housing in Fresno/Madera area? I will be working in the NICU at Children's Central CA in Madera and their satellite unit at St. Agnes in Fresno. If anyone has traveled in that area can you tell me where you stayed and the cost?

Consistent, clean, well-stocked places all over the place. But too $$. Last time I got one for $22/night, with a list price of $74/night, on Priceline (Sacramento). You only have to pay for a week in advance, which gives you time to find another place if you don't care for this sort of housing.

Also hotelguides.com allows you to offer low-ball bids on stays of 14 days or longer- if the managers want to they will accept or counter your offer. Don't be bashful- make your lowest offer. So far my best find there was $30/night for a month- luxe, huge king suite, full amentities, free massive breakfast buffet, etc., with a list price of $80/night. This was also near Sacramento.

If hotels aren't your thing or you are looking at a longer stay, VRBO.com has options, but Fresno isn't really a place with a low season, so it's doubtful. Still, if you find a place you like, check the listing's availability calendar- if it's empty for a long time, make the owner a low-ball offer. All they can do is ignore you, or say no. For example, in the summer off-season in Palm Springs you can get a luxe condo, fully furnished, all utilities, pools, tennis, and spas for $750/month (list prices are about $1500-$2000).

P.S.: If you're ever in S.F., treat yourself to the lovely La Luna Inn on Lombard Street- get the king room on the 2nd or 3rd floor for gorgeous views of the Golden Gate. Most other motels in that town are shockingly filthy hovels, and La Luna is even cheaper than those dives.
