What has clinicals been like since the pandemic started? Are you worried you haven’t gotten the same hands on experience pre-pandemic? (my hope is the pandemic is over if I get in but, who knows at this rate)

Do you get any OR experience or a choice to do a rotation in the OR? The OR is my ultimate goal, but as far as I know there’s no clinicals in the OR ?. I know Fresno State has a preceptorship where you can choose a speciality but my chances of getting in to State are slim to none.

Theyve mixed in virtual simulations into our clinical hours to make up for the times we cant go in due to facilities having student restrictions due to covid. I did have 1 semester pre-covid and it basically is the same experience as before just less time spent at clinicals. Hmm I am a little worried but I will learn more than I ever would as a new grad nurse and will have someone with me to train me too.

We do get OR experience. We do not get to choose but I got a few clinical days in 3rd semester at CRMC and Valley Childrens in the OR.

How many times did you apply before you got in??

I got in on my first try. I know a handful a friends who got in their first try along with almost all of my classmates too.

OMG 3rd time?! Have you been eligible each year you've applied? Wow.

Hi! No my first year applying I was ineligible because one of my prerequisites weren’t equivalent. But my second time I was eligible. Just didn’t get in. So I’m hoping this year is my year!

May I ask, what instructors did you have doing your prereqs (science, english, math) and what were your grades in those courses and TEAS score? I want to know if it will be more or less difficult based off of grades and TEAS, I know it's a very individual experience. How many papers have you had to write per semester? Did you feel adequately prepared with english 1A? Thank you so much for your generosity!!

I will say after going to Fresno State taking English 10, I’ll never be prepared for English. It’s just not my subject. I got an A in English though but I’m still horrid at writing. I’ll take horrid at writing than being bad with math and science though. I’ve seemed to squeak by with any paper though, got A’s on both my A&P and Micro papers.

I've heard there are many papers written in nursing school and I'm curious to see how paper happy the professors are at Fresno City.

Are you taking any classes now? I'm taking biochem at FCC to pass the time. Biggest downside is the lab kit was so expensive!

Nope, haven’t taken any classes since the start of COVID. I was in self defense in the Spring of 2020 but what was suppose to be a PE class turned into watching self defense videos. I’m bummed because I was actually trying to learn some self defense skills. I really only need comm (I’m going to try and argue against needing it because I took Comm 7 at Fresno State) aside from just getting into the program. I got a job full time while waiting to get into the program last year, so I’m just working.

No prob! I don't mind answering questions at all, I know how it is to be in your shoes so keep asking more if you want

I took (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) for Anatomy at Clovis Community College (B)

Physio with (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) at Madera Community College (A)

Micro with (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) at Madera Community College (A)

Chem 3a with (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) at Clovis Community College (A)

English 1A I think I took with (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) at Clovis Community College (A)

Math 11 - (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) at Clovis Community College (B)

I got a 76 on my TEAS. Yes English 1A did prepare me, the papers they assign are not very hard at all. I think I've had like between 0-2 papers a semester that are like 1-2 pages in length. Definitely not something you should be worried about.

For my pre-reqs I pretty much chose teachers I heard were an "easy A" class. I did not learn as much in these classes but I did fine on my TEAS and have been doing adequately in the nursing program.

What's your program GPA if you don't mind me asking? I have two small boys (2, 5) and I took classes with very challenging professors(Mostly As and a B) and got a 91.3 on TEAS, English was my worst section with an 83. I'm just hoping I don't feel completely overwhelmed by school and being a mom with a limited support system.

Its hard to tell without manually checking my GPA with a GPA calculator but so far I'd say its probably around a 3.0 or so. I don't really worry myself with getting the best grades (passing is 75%). Sounds like you will definitely be fine, there are many moms in the program.

With pre-reqs they tested you based on memorization but with nursing school what makes it much different and difficult is the critical thinking and how you must apply what you learned.
