Frequent Students

How do you handle frequent students? Im K-12 and have nurse pass but those teachers keep sending students to me even though I already gave them treatment. Teachers usually send the students early morning then after 1-2hrs, students will be sent back to me for reasons that are not usually medical or just minor things. I really do have problems with teachers who doesnt exercise their judgement for the kids. Any strategies on how to decline students or how to tell them nicely that their concerns does not merit a clinic visit. To be prank, I want to tell them suck it up. :)

If you can, pull a report from the offending teacher's class that shows the frequency of health room visits and time spent out of class. Present this to the teacher and if this does not help the situation, give a copy to admin. I think you can be more direct with the older kids, but in this day and age of rampant snowflakeitis, you just never know...

It's time for admin support and ask to speak at the next staff meeting and address when it is appropriate to send a student. Sometimes they are coming a second and third time no t from the same teacher but from a special area like music or art and the. Again from lunch staff. It also help to start to educate the students themselves. GL

Data to support your claims, physician evaluation for health issues, parent conferences, and administrator/counselor/teacher support. It's not up to the teacher to assess a student and determine if the child's health issue warrants a visit to the health office or not.

I had a whole bouquet of delicate flowers who just had to stop in the Health Office after gym. One afternoon I saw 6 kids, 2 of which had actual reasons to be here, 2 were waiting in the hall. Their teacher, the one who had the 8 late students, came to see me. We, the entire 6th grade team, came up with a plan to help the delicate flowers make it to class. It took a team approach but it worked and I was only seeing the kids who actually needed to be in the Heath Office. I hope there's a way to help the teachers understand your side.
