Check with your state EMS board. At a bare minimum I believe all states make you take the EMT basic course and in some states if you do some pre-requisites you can challenge the NREMT-P exam.
I'm a new grad, I work in the ICU.... and I have always been interested in being in an ambulance. What can I do as an RN for this? Would I have to take extra classes? I am totally clueless... but I'd love to do that (pre-hospital work) like, on the side~ Advice please??Thanks :)

Illinois has a license for a pre-hospital RN. There aren't many of us but those of us that do pre-hospital love it! Its essentially up to your medical director of the region that you live in, as to what you need to do. For instance, I had three years in a level one ER, working on a daily basis with the medical director. The only thing I had to do was some ride time and away I went. If you would like more details, let me know. I live in central IL and volunteer on a rural fire/EMS squad and have for seven years - I've been in the same ER for 10 years now.
I have been an RN for 3 years, but my career in healthcare began as an EMT/firefighter. This is my true passion, although nursing has been extremly rewarding to me, I would be interested in some info as well. I live in a south suburb of Chicago, but Illinois is Illinois....any info would be much appriciated. If only a part time thing I would love to do it.
