Hello everyone,
I am new to the site, but have been lurking and looking around for months.
I toured Fortis College last week and was very impressed with the design of the program , specifically for LPN's trying to become RN's. As well as the length of the program. Cost of the program was not bad either, much cheaper than MCI (if your already an LPN).
Haven't seen a lot of conversation about Fortis College's ADN/RN program. Has anyone attended or currently attending? I am a bit concerned that it is not SAC or NLNAC accredited.
Does anyone know if you can proceed on to a BSN school after having attended a non- accredited school?
Have also considered NSU's LPN to BSN program, but have heard many negative things about the school as a whole. Not sure if I want to take that on ?
ANY info concerning this would be greatly appreciated. :)

While I cannot speak for all schools, my institution (UVa) will not enroll graduates from US institutions that are unaccredited or have lost accreditation. I am aware of some hospitals in Virginia will not hire grads from programs that do not have NLN or CCNE accreditation as well.

If your school is not NLN accredited and they do not have like a "sister" school then you can't go on with your BSN...You are still eligible to sit for your boards and as long as you pass the boards then there is no reason why anyone shouldn't hire you. And what I mean by "sister" school is like another school that is affiliated with your school. For instance, we have a school called VWCC where I live and they are not NLN accredited because they do not have enough clinical instructors who have their MSN, they have BSNs, so if you go there you can only go to Radford or Jefferson school of Health Sciences for your BSN. They are the only ones who will accept you. If they are not NLN accredited I would highly recommend not going their especially in the Richmond area. That is where I am from and I don't think any schools will accept you there. Good Luck

Fortis in Ohio does not have a good name, though I do not know about your area.

Thank you for all of your assistance. What is the cost of the LPN to RN program? What is the length of the program? I live in Texas. I was told to come in and speak with a rep. I asked specific questions and wasn't able to get an answer. Please give any info you have. Thanks!

I actually attended Fortis when it was Bohecker in Columbus, Ohio. Nothing but complications, drama, and constant issues with instructors and administrator's. I believe their NLNAC accretidation is pending. I am not sure if Fortis has to have one accreditation for the main campus or each site has to have it's own. I would research that first.
As far as transferring from the Fortis' program to a different college to obtain your BSN, I would do lengthy research on that as well. I know there were several colleges in Ohio that would not take the credits from the ADN program because the lack of accreditation Fortis had.
Good Luck and make sure you research this educational institution thoroughly!

No school in Ohio will except Fortis/Boheckers credits because they are not regionally accrediated, I have experience with this beacause i graduated from the in 2009. When you look them up on the Board of Nursings website all the campuses are either on provisional or conditional status. None of them have ever been on full status. Although Hondros, the other for profit school across the street, is working towards their regionally accredited status and a BSN program as well. They for right now though are not a regionally accredited school. To address the other concerns on the school the tuiton is outrageous, the clinical sites are in Akron, Portsmouth to name a few. For the LPN-RN program you'll be lucky to get into a hospital and if you do the staff will not let you pass meds. My advise go to a local community college and take all your general ed's then transfer to another school. Columbus State just changed their acceptance policy for LPN-RN's to once per year because there were "to many qualified applicants". Try COTC in newark, Clark state in Springfiels, OU in zanesville. THough some programs have a waitlist you hafve to sit on its better than going into debt from a school that has a terrible reputation and not being able to find a job after you graduate.

I attended fortis college for the LPn program in 2009-2010.. It had a couple of great teachers/ Rns, but they both quit and went to other schools to teach..The rest of the staff was a rotatign door quit fired or ran away screaming in frustration (ok maybe not the last part). As a student it was frustrating grades needed were changed test scores were changed, continuity was absolutely not there in my view..THe sites as one previous student noted were all over the place and most were nursing homes, some I would dread working at, and I didn't go through to much paper work lost, but other students had issues with such..
Dress code was lousily enforced, smoking right out side the doors wasn't stopped (for those non smokers who don't appreciate walking through a door and into c smoke), I guess to stop complaining, I would not recommend fortis, but if you can ignor a lot and put up with a lot and want a cheap school fortis is cheap.. But hondros has an RN program that takes off the cost of transfer credits (max 25 transfer credits + $245 times 25 credits cheaper of their posted cost).
Just saying beware fortis in my view..be ware.

I will try to answer what I know. Fortis, last I recall they had clnical sites as LPN, not sure about RN, but ask them and get the answer in writing not verbal. The cost is about the same as hondros, maybe a little more since hondros seemed more willing to accept transfer credits when I contacted them. Space wise fortis didn't have a lot of space and ended up getting moved around/ shuffled at times not knowing where class was, but not often.
The other thing I remember is the don and assistant don were not much help with issues, one quit and one was fired (fired way later than she should have been, but won't get into that).
As for the LPN program, it was pretty good, except they sent us to LTC facilities and nothing else except for the OB and PEDS clnicals.
Staff when I was there quit often, printing off the linrary computers was often a no no, unless it was a page or two. But at times we ahd to print lots of pages due to no power points or we had to print osme thing for school, but ironically we paid a lab fee every semester.
But from what I have heard and seen a lot of schools with the nursing programs have issues and always get things in writing. I repeat get every thing you can in writing.
As for transfer issues, not sure, but have heard the credits might not transfer. But ask the school and what ever they say get it in writing.. I say this to cover your self, and if, an issue arises you have documentation to refer to.
I am going to AIAM for my RN now and they also have issues, so I do not know what to recommend except to ask lots of questions/make a list and get it in writing.
Good luck and I hope this helps a little. Oh yes you can check the school out at the ohio board of nursing web site to check acredidation/standing with the Ohio Board of Nursing side.
