Foreign Trained RN wanting to study further

I'm a South African trained RN (4 year Diploma in General Nursing, Community Health Nursing,Psychiatric Nursing and Midwifery) who is now an American citizen after living and working in the USA for 7 years. I am considering further study as an Advanced Practice RN (either Acute Care NP or CRNA) . After my initial 4 year diploma in nursing was done in South Africa, I went back to university and completed a year long Advanced Diploma in Critical Care Nursing Science.

My question is this. What do I need to do prior to applying for an advanced practice degree? How do I find out whether my 4 year Diploma as well as my 1 year Post grad Crit care course meet the admission requirements for a university?

I currently work as a Flight Nurse on an emergency helicopter service, doing what really is Advanced practice nursing already, in addition to working part time in a busy University hospital Trauma center.

I'd love to go back to school and study further, but the thought of doing basic nursing studies toward a BSN is somewhat off putting.

Any helpful advice would be most appreciated.

Well, first of all welcome to allnurses from a fellow South African, but trained in the US. I think you would have to check with the school of your choice which courses would transfer toward an advanced degree. Your coursework from SA would have to be evaluated as any other foreign credential.

Goodluck and wish you all the best.

Totsiens, sala kahle, goodbye(which ever describes you!)
