I'm a South African trained RN (4 year Diploma in General Nursing, Community Health Nursing,Psychiatric Nursing and Midwifery) who is now an American citizen after living and working in the USA for 7 years. I am considering further study as an Advanced Practice RN (either Acute Care NP or CRNA) . After my initial 4 year diploma in nursing was done in South Africa, I went back to university and completed a year long Advanced Diploma in Critical Care Nursing Science.
My question is this. What do I need to do prior to applying for an advanced practice degree? How do I find out whether my 4 year Diploma as well as my 1 year Post grad Crit care course meet the admission requirements for a university?
I currently work as a Flight Nurse on an emergency helicopter service, doing what really is Advanced practice nursing already, in addition to working part time in a busy University hospital Trauma center.
I'd love to go back to school and study further, but the thought of doing basic nursing studies toward a BSN is somewhat off putting.
Any helpful advice would be most appreciated.
