Foreign Educated Nurse move to US? (state undecided)

Published

Hi, I am a foreign(asian) educated single nurse moving to the US soon, however, I haven't yet decided on which state to finally work in.

My main concern is that this is my first big move to a place where I have never been to and though I've met a few acquaintances who have moved to the US, I do not really know any one there. Some of the things I think about as a single nurse, is starting over and making friends or engaging the community and there is the fear of loneliness. I've read/seen that different states are either urbanized or rural or mix of both. And there is the question of doubt, will I cope if I randomly get assigned because of lack of preference.

I grew up in the city and also have lived and worked in a highly urbanized area.

Any advice on considering/chosing which state in US to work in?

The biggest hurdle is meeting state requirements. I would suggest thinking about what you want out of your move. Do you want mountains, coast, town or city? What do you see your new life to be like?

I can only imagine how daunting it would be to relocate to a different country. Have you tried investigating major metro areas to determine which ones may have a significant population of nurses that share your origins? It seems that this would not only indicate that the state BON has experience dealing with the licensure issues, but also that there would be an opportunity to create a supportive network with your fellow ex-pats. For instance, I know that the Houston area has a very strong Philippine Nurses Association that is very welcoming to newcomers. There are probably similar organizations as well.

Best of luck to you in your relocation.

Thank you for your input.
