I have been following this site for sometime now and i feel i should post my concern and questions for advice. Am a nigerian nurse, got my bsn (with midwifery) in 2010 with less than two years experience. i applied for a post bachelors Phd program in human development and family studies in one of the universities in texas. i got accepted with full funding to start august.i plan on writing cgfns and nclex during my stay in US. my questions are:1.will this phd program be beneficial to me as a nurse in US?(i plan on specialising in either gerontology or other health related areas) 2. in terms of H1B visa, will i be qualified for the visa with this degree? 3.can i teach in a nursing school with this combination?4.will this advanced degree make me more marketable in US?please i need your expert advice. Though i plan on switching to either public health or msn once i get my nclex.

1. Education will never go the waste. But it is not nursing so as far as employment as a nurse no.
2. H1B - note employable as a nurse - but explore what opportunities you will be able to get a job, many of son's friends with Phds can not find jobs.
3. No nursing looks for a MSN ( Masters in Nursing ).
4.I don't know about the field you are looking to, but I know that the expectation is that you go back to your home and apply your knowledge
I do not think you can work in the US with a student visa. How luck to get a fully paid education in the US, but since you are coming over as student make the most of that experience.
And I switching majors in my opinion is not ethical and you still won't be able to work as nurse,
