[h=2]Student loan forgiveness available to nurses in some rural communities[/h]

Newly registered nurses may still be able to take advantage of a federal program that began accepting applicants in April 2013 to have part of their student loans forgiven if they are prepared to work in rural communities.

Under the program, nurses - as well as family doctors and residents, and nurse practitioners - can apply for partial Canada Student Loan forgiveness if they agree to work in one of more than 4,200 designated rural and remote communities with populations below 50,000. Designated locations include communities that provide health services to First Nations, Métis and Inuit populations.

Nurses are eligible to receive up to $4,000 per year in Canada Student Loan forgiveness. For more information, nurses should contact the Canada Student Loans Program, found online at CanLearn.ca, and download the application form.

There are federal and provincial programs. Not sure about OSAP but with my SK loan I get up to $4000/year forgiven as well. The only reason you won't is if you don't owe that much either provincially or federally. The $4000 is not a fixed rate, you receive up to $4000, but it's technically 20% of how much you owe to a max of $4000, so the amount presumably will be less each year unless you owe A LOT. And if I owe $20000 federally and $2000 provincially I will only get the Federal benefit (technically I would get $400 from the provincial government, but essentially nothing). Additionally, you are not only required to work 400 hours, but you need to be employed for a full calendar year. You can't take off part-way through the year and expect to get paid even if you put in 800 hours. You can stay on casual after your 400 hours are up and still get the benefit, though. Hopefully this makes sense.

I was at the postal code look up to see where would be a place that qualifies for this, and so far i haven't been able to find one. Anyone have experience in getting their forgiveness? And where did you have to go work for a year?

This is the postal code lookup they provided:

@ bilin825: Note that the place needs to be considered a designated community which they describe as a place away from "census metropolitan areas; census agglomerations (geographic units) with an urban core population of 50 000 or more; and provincial capitals. " Since I live in Ontario I looked up "List of towns in Ontario" and I found that the places with the smallest population qualified. I would take a look at your province's towns if you are still looking for a place that qualifies.
