Follow up from SEC assessment

Hi there,

I'm looking for anyone who has undertaken the SEC assesment and now are having to do some sort of follow up course as a result CRNBC committe meeting.

I am a nurse from Australia and arrived in Vancouver in December and have come into alot of trouble with CRNBC regarding this new assessment. I completed an SEC assesment in Mental Health and Childrens Nursing in February and the result of that was that i had to go and complete a Psychomotor Skills Review Course at Kwantlen University even though i am trained as a general surgical nurse and have worked in the same for the past 3 years.

I am disputing CRNBC's decision at present and am looking for anyone that has had any trouble in this area.

Nurses in BC who have been living and working there for years know almost nothing about SEC, if they've even heard of it. They cannot answer your questions. SEC assesses educational preparation in ALL areas of nursing as compared ot the educational preparation received by nurses graduating from Canadian nursing schools. If your educational preparation is not substantially equivalent to that preparation and you want to be registered in a province using SEC, then you must meet requirements. As has been explained numerous times, nurses trained in Canada are generalists and can provide basic care across the lifespan. Nurses from other countries who have trained under specialist models often require some upgrading to meet Canadian requirements. Be prepared for a battle.
