FNPs what is a good specialty?

Published

Hello All FNPs,

I am a FNP student…and I spoke to a FNP recently who advised me to figure out where I want to work so I will pick that clinic during my last rotation. The thought process is that if you go to the clinic you want to work in the last semester they may offer you a job.

With that said, I am confused at where I want to work. I've always had a gut feeling I like orthopedics? But there are so many options out there…….?

Can someone please tell me pros and cons? For example, I heard dermatology is a great practice to get into….pain management is not. I am interested in flexibility? I am not sure if that exists but I want to know.

THank you!

Derm is a good field! Pain is an abyss of cranky, ticked off people. My choice would be headaches. I love other people's headaches. That's exceptionally niche. Allergy folks are taking it in, and its an interesting field. Urgent care is the most practical but likely theost overworked and likely underpaid. I think infectious disease is interesting except HIV. Idk but I find that underwhelming. Orthopod is neat but know your stuff and get ready to work with jocks all day. Know how to trade jabs with the docs too.

Geriatrics! Pays well, lots of old people. You get to use a good combination of skills. Bonus: You get to listen to living history.

Seriously, even if you don't do geriatrics specifically, spend some time with a geriatrician or at least someone who does a lot of geriatrics as part of the practice. The baby boomers are really just beginning to hit now and you need to understand the issues of treating an aging body.
