FNP vs Primary Care NP for health clinic work

Published

Hey there!

I'm interested in working in a gay health clinic as an NP. What route would y'all recommend me going: FNP or Primary Care NP? I would like to stick to the adult population so I'm thinking Primary Care?

Thanks!

When I was working on my NP I was told that it would be harder to find work as an adult NP, and that taking family would broaden your career options. Taking family doesn't mean you have to BE a family NP, but it does make clinicals easier. And when you're looking for work after graduation if the only places hiring are urgent care centers or anyone who sees all age populations you'll be SOL.

Hm good to know. Thanks, Polskiijames!

Specializes in Psychiatric and Mental Health NP (PMHNP).

FNP is primary care. If you know you only want to work with adults, and want to specialize in the LGBT population, you can do an Adult and Geri Primary Care NP. This will allow you to treat ages 14 and up. An FNP is about one semester longer and includes a rotation in Peds and one in Women's Health. You could get the Adult/Geri then do the FNP as a post master's certificate. I am Adult/Geri and had no trouble finding a job after graduating. There are also NP programs that provide certifications in HIV treatment that you can earn at the same time you are completing the program. Good luck.
