FNP vs ACNP

Hi, I am starting a FNP program in the fall, however my love has been and always will be Emergency Medicine. If I receive my degree as an FNP, can I take additional courses to obtain an acute care license or will I have to complete another masters degree to do so? (We do not have any local ACNP programs.) Also can I still work in emergency medicine with a FNP liscene? Thanks for your advice and help

Hello and Welcome to allnurses.com

So good to have you with us.

You will not have to do another degree. You should be able to do a post-grad certificate in ACNP.

And, you will need to check your state's requirements whether you can work in ED as FNP. Like in Texas, the FNP is not allowed to work in Emergency Medicine.

We hope you enjoy allnurses.com and good luck with your NP career goals.

I live in IL so this is true for my area: what the ER wants is ACNP and PNP. I'm work prn in an ER and am adult health CNS who is back in school for the peds/family CNS and that will make me qualified to see everyone in the ER.

I was reading through these blogs... I am looking into NP... I am in Pennsylvania and when I was in nursing school I worked in the ER... Mostly all of the NP's were FNP's...
