FNP: Transferring states question

Published

Hi everyone, I just recently graduated from my family nurse practitioner program. My wife and I are planning to move away from Arizona in December 2021. I'm going to continue working as an RN until we move states (not sure which one we are going to yet). My question is: would it be beneficial in ANY way to take the AANP/ANCC here, work on getting credentialed/DEA #/etc (can this happen without having an employer?), would this make transferring easier? Or should I wait to take the cert. exam in the state I'm going to? Thanks

The certification exam is national, it doesn't matter what state you take it in.

There is no point in getting licensed and paying for that if you're moving, but you can get licensed in the state you plan to move to.

Definitely don't get a DEA. It costs $900+ and it's state specific.

Thank you for helping me understand, so I can take the cert. exam anytime, but then apply for licensure in the state we end up deciding on. Seems simple enough! Can you tell me how long it takes on average to get fully credentialed/licensed in a state?

DO NOT APPLY for your DEA until you are hired by a employer!

You will have to give the address of your employer on the DEA application. You cannot just put your home address, it has to be a business address. The $731 dollars in NONREFUNDABLE. I made the mistake of doing this and they held on to my money. When I did end up getting a job I was able to get the money back to go towards my new application but it was a pain up the butt and I had to call to speak with a representative. Take my advice!!

AANP and ANCC are national certifications so it does not matter which state you take it in. Good Luck!

Plus get your employer to pay for your DEA, I did!
