FNP TO CRNA, Anyone?

Published

Im currently an FNP working inpatient cardiology and palliative medicine. I have 5 years critical experience in mixed units under me; stopped working ICU after I started working as an NP a year ago.

Any if you made a similar change to CRNA? What has your experience been like?

Thanks!

Could I ask why you desire to change your career?

I have not done this but it can be done. I know of one person who was practicing as a FNP who decided to go back and he did just fine. Just realize you won't be able to work like you possibly did during FNP school. You more than likely could get credit for your Adv Pharm, Assessment course, and Adv Patho courses as well but would have to discuss that with your program of choice.

Yeah there are a number nurses who have both NP and CRNA certification. I personally know 2. One was a colleague I worked with who had FNP and then decided she didn't like the role and went back to bedside nursing in the ICU for a year, applied to CRNA and got accepted and is now practicing full time as a CRNA. I didn't think she got credit for any of her NP courses, in fact, she did the whole full time 2-year program. The other is an FNP/ACNP who also has CRNA (talk about multiple letters!). This one practices as a NP in Critical Care and Flight and is faculty at an AGACNP program.
