FNP in a psychiatric office?

Published

I've just started talking with the hiring manager for a psychiatric office that is willing to hire a new grad FNP. They know the extent of my psych experience is what you come across in an ER. The manager is going out of town so I can't really ask any questions for a week so I'm asking my question here out of burning curiosity! This office looks like they are primarily psychologists and counselors with one new hire experienced mental health nurse practitioner and a physician one day a week . . . any insight on what a FNP would be wanted for in the office?

I work in inpatient psychiatry and we have a medical doctor see the patients in addition to psychiatrist for a "history and physical" just to make sure there aren't any outstanding medical problems and because some of the psychiatrist don't feel comfortable ordering medications like insulin, etc. I could see an outpatient mental health clinic wanting an FNP for something like that basically for the reasons above and to bill insurance companies for more tests.

I completely understand what your saying and the OP definitely needs to check with their BON. But in Virginia an FNP is allowed to work in acute care, psych, primary care, women's health, etc.

I am still a BSN to DNP student. I specifically contacted the BON in VA with this question as part of an assignment. I never could get anyone to return my call or emails. I just assumed that it was not possible. In my area there are a lot of places hiring PAs because they can work anywhere but NPs can only do womens health, psych, or peds etc...
