FNP program South Univeristy

Published

Does anyone currently attend the South Univeristy online FNP program? I am seeing a lot of negative reviews and would love to have a good opinion on the school and it's program. I am supposed to start there sept 1, 2016.

South University has a great program. You will see negative reviews to online programs that has a high Academic standards. South is no different. It is what you put into it. I did not do the online program but went to the university and attained my MSN-FNP.

Thanks for the reply, I just saw a lot of negative reviews about the financial piece and then being a for- profit institution.

This is the worst example of bold faced propaganda I have seen in a while. The South University online program is a travesty of a sham. Let me tell you some of the things they will not tell you.

1. They have a graduation rate of 10%. That's actually good for them it used to be 2%.

2. No one knows what their retention rate is (that's a proprietary secret) and they aren't telling.

3. South University just settled last November a long drawn-out case with the Department of Justice. They paid a fine of 95.5 million dollar over false claims regarding illegal recriutment practices. They were being sued fot 11 billion dollars but the DOJ was incomprehensibly merciful.

4. They are a for-profit post secondary school who is in the process of financially melting down as evidenced by their delisting from the NASDAQ in 2015. They are now owned by the Wall Street investement firms of KKR and Goldman Sachs. And we all know they love nursing education.

South's parent company is called Education Management Corporation. Look them up. They earn upwards of 90 % of their income from student Pell Grants, Title IV loans and post 9/11 VA monies and have high loan default rates.

5.They are legendary for targetiing vulnerable target groups such as minorities and non-traditional student populations.

6. They require students to sign an arbitration agreement as a condition for enrollemnt. This should be a major red light as they are deceptively getting you to sign away your right to sue them if and when they don't live up to there promises which is most of the time. Reputable schools don't do this.

7. They do not have good relations in the preceptor community. This is important as you will need five of them. The competition is fierce in most cities and towns and there are many other entities competing for very limited spots. Again they are deceptive about this but they DO NOT help and will leave you high and dry with a bunch of expensive worthless credits, in tons of debt with no degree.

So DO believe the negative reviews online because where South is concerned the reviews are correct. They are not for the most part the product of disgruntlement as they would have you believe but reflective of a very serious problem in predatory for profit post secondary education.

Look I want you to fulfill your dreams and become an NP. But any school run by EDMC, and South is just one of their brands, should be held in contempt.

PM me if necessary. But watch out for these wolves in lamb's clothing.

What are the top FNP online schools?

A Google top online school search is of course the obvious point of departure. But all schools must pass the litmus test. In other words by looking at the things South can't do for you you will learn what the potential school of your choice can. A well respected, long established school with a steriling reputation in the nursing, academic and even medical communities is a bare bones must. As competition for the well respected NP schools becomes more intense each year, go for the gold and most prestigious school available given the constraints of time, money etc. But do not setlle for any school that makes it too easy. They are suspect. If you need to take the GED take it. You want to go to a school that doesn't admit the usual Tom, Dick and Mary. These type schools are usually the for-profits and more interested in marketing and making a B-line to your student loan money than offering a well respected quaity product. So again, you just can't do enough reseach. But if you do you should have no regreats for the time, money, blood, sweat and tears.

Caveat: The ground school of your choice can to a certain extent help you evaluate their respective online component; but still being different learning formats you must ask a lot of questions especially about preceptorship help and credit transfer to another school if push comes to shove. Make sure all promises are in writing and written in non-gray substantive language. Keep the questions coming if you have any. I am your advocate, not on anyone's payroll and have thirty years of attending the greatest school around. The one called "hard knocks"
